They are more difficult to make because the manufacturer needs obtain white ghillie netting vs the standard brown. Also natural jute is light brown in color and dying it to a lighter color is very difficult. Most snow ghillie suits are made of synthetic thread because the thread can be made in the white color.
There are two different patterns for winter ghillie suits. One is completely white and the other is white with patches of dark brown scattered about.
The completely white ghillie suits are rare due to the netting color issue, however this can be overcome with enough white thread to completely mask the brown netting. This ghillie suit usually does not have a base layer. If they do, the base layer is not a white color. The use of a completely white ghillie suit is only necessary if you are in terrain that is completely covered with snow.
An alternative to a pure white ghillie suit is a white snow jump suit. These suits were showcased in the movie Shooter starring Mark Walhberg. These suits are more effective than a ghillie suit because the snow texture is smooth, calling for a smoother camouflage suit. Where a ghillie suit tries to mimic vegetation with thread in forests, the thread texture is not needed or effective in pure snow.
If you are looking for a simple snow suit to play paintball or airsoft and you know someone who works in a high factory, you may want to ask them for a white clean room suit. These suits are all white, very durable and cheap. They will get you through the day in the snow on the paintball field.
The two color white and brown ghillie suit is great for terrain that is partially covered in snow. At first glance it may seem odd to have brown patches on a winter ghillie suit, but this pattern is very effective in most winter terrain where any snow exists. In this terrain you often see brush and wood protruding through the snow creating the brown patches throughout the landscape. There are a few companies selling this style ghillie suit. These suits are made overseas and usually come as a 4 pc. set.
The snow ghillie suit is probably the only ghillie suit that does not come in a kit. There are no custom kits available with white colored jute or synthetic thread. You can find white thread at any fabric store but be sure to get a thread that’s durable enough for a ghillie suit. Most synthetic thread is nylon based.
